Quitting smoking is a big decision, and choosing the right moment can make the journey feel a lot more manageable. One of the most helpful things you can do is pick a quit date that genuinely works for you, not one chosen out of pressure or rushed because you “should.” Your quit date is the starting line for a new chapter, so it makes sense to set yourself up for success.

Start by looking ahead at your calendar or your diary. Are there any events coming up, you know, birthdays, nights out, holidays, or stressful deadlines coming up? Moments that usually involve celebration, alcohol, or high pressure can act as strong smoking triggers. Choosing a quit date after these events isn’t “putting it off” or failing, it’s planning wisely. For example, if your birthday is next week and you know there’ll be drinks and socialising, allowing that event to pass before quitting can reduce temptation and help you feel more in control and confident about your quit.

On the other hand, some people prefer to quit before a meaningful event, like a holiday or a milestone, using it as motivation. There’s no right or wrong choice, what matters is that the date feels achievable and positive.

Once you’ve chosen your date, treat it like an appointment with yourself. Mark it on your calendar, diary or phone, tell someone you trust, and begin preparing clear out smoking supplies cigarettes, ashtrays, lighters, plan distractions games on your phone, reading, knitting etc, and consider what support you’ll use, nicotine replacement, pharmacotherapy, apps, or check-ins with a stop smoking advisor.
