Planning for High Risk Situations
Sometimes you might find yourself in situations where it’s easy to get cigarettes and you’re more likely to smoke, i.e. a high-risk situation. Imagine you’re watching a football match at the pub. Your friend is smoking a cigarette and offers you one. Or what if you’ve had a stressful day at work and are craving a cigarette. What would you say?
In situations like this, you can:
-
Plan ahead – if you know you’re going to be around smokers at some point, think about what techniques you can use to stay quit. Have a chat with an advisor if you’d like to talk about it in more detail.
-
Use your medication – it’s important to be using your medication properly, to help manage high-risk situations. Are you taking your medication as recommended?
-
Remember your motivation – reflect on your goals for staying quit. Remind yourself why this quit attempt matters.
-
Be kind – quitting smoking is one of the hardest things you’ll ever do and it’s common that you’ll have to deal with high-risk situations that will make you want to smoke. Treat yourself with kindness and don’t punish yourself for this!
